I tell stories and contemplate big ideas, mostly about history and culture.

My writing has appeared in major media outlets in the U.S. and Canada, including The Washington Post, Salon, The Walrus, NOW magazine and The Toronto Star, just to name a few.

In 2019, I was selected by acclaimed author Charlotte Gray and the Writers’ Trust of Canada to be part of their inaugural Rising Star program.

As a radio and podcast producer, I contribute to national network programs on CBC Radio and BackStory, a popular, nationally-syndicated podcast about American history.

Before turning to journalism, I was a lecturer in the Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality at the University of Virginia, where I received my Ph.D. in history. I’ve also taught at McGill University in Montreal, where I completed my B.A. and M.A. in history and literature.

I’m always looking for a new project and am available for freelance writing, editing and radio/podcast production. You can connect with me on Twitter, or through email, melissa.j.gismondi[at]gmail[dot]com.
